Hey Grub, seeing as how you're a new player to the franchise, would you like for them to continue in the FPS direction in the future or are you open to a reversal or outright change?

In the making-of videos, Capcom mentioned that they might have to change the direction of the next game or move in a new direction altogether yet want to keep the formula they've found in RE7 going.

So, while it might continue the horror elements and remain true to the older games similar to how RE7 does it, the next mainline Resident Evil title may not be as familiar as RE7.

Would you be fine with that or would you lose interest in the franchise again?

Long Answer: I feel like this game hooked me because it was made with a passion around a certain idea, and you can always tell when developers are particularly passionate about their work when it's incredible in most every facet they wanted to hit on. Could be that they really wanted to try something different, and that's where that passion came from, but they could also have derived it from just the central idea and themes of the game.

Either way, I'm fine with the game so long as it has the same attention and passion behind it that this game had. It's polished, immersive, and fun. If a Third person shooter can do the same thing, by all means.

However, I've not seen a good third person horror game lately, and honestly, I think they've tapped into a good market here. It depends on what you want our of the series, though. Is RE traditional puzzles and atmosphere, or is it campy fun action coop? This game is an entirely new direction for the series, so honestly, I'd like to see them explore it a bit more before going on to something else.

That, and you can't have this sort of game with Chris or Leon as the protagonist. Will Ethan/Mia become similarly larger than life protags later on? Possibly, but the fresh start was enjoyable enough to bring me in.

Short answer: depends on the game

Honestly, I thought Ethan was a boring character because he lacked any sort of real input on anything happening around him. Sure, he at times would say something like "what the fuck?" or "fuck you!", but in an attempt to make him be a host for the player, they stripped him of most of his personality and character development. He is literally what he is, a body for the eyes of the player and I'm not sure that's a good thing.

This is one area I think they regressed on. The charm of the Resident Evil cast is what makes the characters larger than life. Ironically, I found that the protagonist and the 'good-guys' lacked a whole lot of charm and as a result, were completely overshadowed by the antagonists such as the Bakers. But even so, the supporting cast had some personality, where as Ethan was made to be a barren slab you moved around.

Another concern of mine is that the second outing would not hit any of the marks nearly as well as this game did. Can you really create a similar experience for the second time, without it feeling like you're replaying the first game? With this sort of niche product/genre, they're far more absorbent to gameplay clichés and retreads and I'm not confident in the ability for a second game to be nearly as well received.

That all being said, Capcom will more than likely treat the mainline series as an experimentation of different tropes and genres (gameplay) to create something that exhibits the same sort of reception as RE7.

It will be interesting to see where they go from here, as a return to third-person may be viewed as a return to the tried and true, all the while the continuation of the first-person gameplay will come across as retreading. They're pretty much forced to show the same level of passion and effort as they displayed in RE7 -- and that -- only happened because this was a major attempt at reviving a stagnate franchise.

For all the Robs out there:

    According to Resident Evil 7 director Koushi Nakanishi, the team went with a more “photo realistic depiction” of characters. Because of this, Chris Redfield looks less bulging in the upcoming Not A Hero DLC.

    He goes on to say even though Redfield’s model was a “pretty real impression” in Resident Evil 6, the model looked “deformed” in the current title.

    “Although it is fairly realistic impression, even if it mixes with the character of “7”, it seems that a sense of incongruity will come out,” said Nakanishi.
